Located in Amador County on Highway 88 east of Jackson, the community began in 1855 when Albert Leonard built an inn amidst a pine grove.

Nearby are Chaw-Se (Indian Grinding Rock State Park), the picturesque town of Volcano, and Black Chasm Cave.
