Located in southern El Dorado, Grizzly Flat today is little more than a loose conglomeration of homes in the pines. But once this was one of the largest mining towns in the region. Some 1,000 miners searched for gold here back in 1852. In 1856 a lumber mill was built here, and during the 1880s there were several hydraulic mining operations and a few quartz mines. Grizzly Flat is a short drive from the Somerset-Fairplay wine country.
