Originally known as Mud Springs, El Dorado was once the center of a large quartz-mining district. Alsol, it was once an important camp on the Carson Emigrant Trail.Its Nevada House was a trading post and Pony Express station. Several old buildings mark the town at the junction of Pleasant Valley Road and Highway 49 southwest of Placerville. Here, you'll find a coffeehouse/art gallery and a famous restaurant, Poor Red's.
